Dr. Edward K. Brown was a distinguished economist, respected Pan-Africanist, and one of the founding leaders of the African Center for Economic Transformation (ACET). For nearly two decades, he played a central role in shaping ACET’s vision, research agenda, and commitment to advancing Africa’s economic transformation through evidence-based policy and regional cooperation. Widely admired for his intellect, leadership, and mentorship, Dr. Brown championed stronger African institutions, improved education systems, and expanded economic opportunities across the continent. His career in international development spanned more than 40 years, including senior leadership roles at the World Bank across Africa, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia. Beyond his professional achievements, he was deeply valued as a mentor, colleague, and friend whose warmth, integrity, and unwavering optimism inspired generations of researchers and policymakers. Dr. Brown’s legacy lives on through the institutions he helped build, the people he mentored, and the transformative vision for Africa that he advanced throughout his life.
